Internet Service for FreeIf you are reading this article, chances are you have had to find an Internet Service Provider (ISP) at some time in the past. If you are anything like me, you asked around and went with somebody that others seemed happy with. This method can work well, and it did for me. Then we got a year of free internet service with our new Gateway computer. I have really enjoyed not paying upwards of $20 a month for internet service so I began to wonder what we'll do at the end of our free year. It seems more and more people are taking advantage of free ISPs, such as Juno and Alta Vista, so I decided to see what they were all about. The trade-off for your free service, which includes e-mail, is a banner that remains on your screen to display advertising and promotions. Some banners are more obtrusive than others, larger and remaining at the top of your screen. Before going with one of these free ISPs you'll want to be sure the constant banner is something you'll be able to live with. In conjunction with the advertising banner, you may be asked to fill out a questionnaire that will be used to match your advertising banner to your interests. A word of warning, be sure your information (including e-mail address and name) won't be sold by your new ISP. Also make sure you know how often you'll need to click on these banners in order to keep the service. Speaking of service, if you choose a free ISP, be prepared to pay for technical support. One free ISP I recently read about is BlueLight.com. They claim they won't sell your name or e-mail address without your agreement. Another plus is that their banner is less obtrusive than some others. So there you have it! If you can put up with a few distractions, free ISPs may be what you are looking for.
