There may not be many words in this book, unless pictures really do say a thousand words each. Then there are at least 36,000, and that's counting only the block patterns. One things is certain, however, and that's that you'll have a lot to say when you see these fresh, fun, garden-inspired block designs. All the elements you need to create a fabric garden are here -- from roses, tulips, daffodils, and daisies to bees, birds, butterflies, dragonflies, and ladybirds. Mix and match the blocks to create your own garden to wrap around yourself in the middle of winter, or to sit on among the flowers to enjoy a spring picnic.
Flower Garden is divided into three sections: a paper-piecing primer, block patterns, and quilt gallery. The primer is 10 pages long, covering the essential info on how to paper piece, including Jodie Davis's secret for paper piecing curves (pleat the excess fabric!) and finishing off a quilt. It also has helpful tips highlighted, which you should check out even if you're familiar with the basics of paper piecing. You never know, you may find a great new tip. The 36 quilt blocks each have full-size patterns and piecing keys (joining keys), a colour photo of the finished block and a note of any details that need to be added (such as stitching a 3mm bead to the head for the eye on a bird). The quilt gallery provides step-by-step instructions on how to make eight flower gardens; you can either recreate one of these or use them as inspiration for your own arrangement. If you're a quilter with a love for gardens and the creatures in them, be sure to put this book on your wish-list. Along with a request for a few leafy green and blue sunny sky fabrics as well as some bright yellows and red so you can get stuck right in! Jodie Davis has written more than 20 books over the last 12 years to share her quilting ideas with others. Paper Piece a Flower Garden is published by Martingale & Company and can be bought directly from their website or the other big on-line bookstores. ISBN 1-56477-356-6.
