Do you think that the style of your Christmas stocking makes a difference to the present Santa leaves? Does he like classical designs or does he prefer trendy design? As a child I always hung up a pillowcase rather than a stocking, believing that Santa needed loads of room rather than anything else. Whatever you believe, The Christmas Stocking Book is the place to look for designs and ideas.

The Christmas Stocking Book contains designs for 50 different stockings, mostly from fabric but not exclusively. There are also non-traditional stockings from wood, wire and paper. My favourite in this section is a stocking made from chicken wire, decorated with buttons held on with copper wire. What sewer hasn't got a collection of odd buttons in a box? And what a great way to use them up! It also shows how you can personalise a stocking and use it to present a gift e.g. a stocking made from a colourful kitchen towel for someone who loves to cook.

Each stocking is illustrated by a good quality, full-page colour photograph. The text accompanying each photograph includes a short paragraph where the author explains her thinking behind the stocking or provides ideas for variations, a complete "you will need" list, and step-by-step instructions on making the stocking.

At the back of the book are templates for the various stockings, which need to be enlarged (most easily done on a photocopier). Handy hint boxes are scattered through the book, for example how to store you stocking so that it doesn't emerge crumpled up the next year.

This is a great combined ideas book and practical manual. If you're a confident sewer you can simply look at the pictures for new inspiration; if you're enjoy the support of comprehensive, easy-to-follow instruction, read the text. It's definitely a book that'll add to your range of Christmas decorations.
