You've made quilts for all the beds in your house and all the rooms in your friends' houses, you've got a closet full of one-off design shirts, waistcoats and jackets and your friends have hinted non-too subtly that they're having trouble wearing through all the ones you've given them, you've got so many scatter cushions you can't see the sofa and your dining-room table is hidden under the table clothes and place mats, so where do you direct your creative sewing energies to next? Let Carol Parks help you with two terrific books: Making Handbags & Purses and Terrific Totes and Carryalls, both published by Lark Books. Between them these books have 90 designs to stitch, knit or crochet.

My favourite is Terrific Totes and Carryalls, but that's because I always carry so much stuff around and when I look at the beautiful, petite bags in Making Handbags & Purses I think of what I'd have to leave behind. But I do have a friend who'd love a stylish, glamorous purse for her birthday... Which solves her present problems for the next few years - after all, I can make her a different colour every time, to go with all her outfits!

The beauty of making a bag or purse yourself is that you can customise it to be just what you want: large enough to practically carry the kitchen sink, full of little pockets to safely store your keys, glasses, phone, mints, hairbrush, etc, or just big enough for your lipstick and keys. The pattern for the sewing tote bag is a great example of the first, the smocked and needle lace bag of the last (and face it, how many of us have the patience to smock a large item by hand?). Children will be delighted by the tiny tot's backpack, complete with safety harness for teddy to ensure he doesn't fall out while he rides along enjoying the view.

Both books have good quality colour photographs of all the projects. Even more importantly, they have clear, step-by-step instructions for making each item, supplemented with diagrams and templates where necessary. Useful hints and tips are provided throughout - including instructions on working with leather for those who've never tried before. To my mind these books are what quality craft books are about - instructions that actually work accompanied by great photographs so you can see what you're aiming at but that also provide inspiration.
