Play with Applique

© Marion

The accidental discovery of a web site devoted to applique patterns of creatures big and small and fantastical called Critter Pattern Works has rejuvenated my desire to play with applique, something I've been neglecting since I discovered Ruth McDowell's book on her techniques for piecing where I once would've appliqued (called simply Piecing, published by C&T Publishing).

My favourite critters, although it's a hard choice, are definitely the dragons followed closely by a funky alphabet with animals, Noah's ark and 20 different cat faces. Of added interest is that the dragon pattern has been used to explain the working methods of the designer and, for example, how colour choices were made.

To create a 3-dimensional garden or jungle for your critters to live in, have a look at quilter Joan Shay's patterns for flowers. She has developed an easy applique technique, which she calls "Appli-bond," which is to use a bonding material to fuse together of 2 or more layers of fabric. These are then embroidered onto the background fabric leaving the edges remain free to create the 3-D effect.

If you want to people your piece, Bonnet Girls: Gentle Women are applique patterns of Victorian women and children, participating in activities of that period, with interchangeable bonnets and accessories.

For something more arty rather than earthy, have a look at Katie Lane Quilts' Stained Glass Applique Patterns, which have a free flowing effect rather than the straight angular lines of the traditional stained glass.

And lastly, for sheer inspiration, take the time to wait for the 25 thumbnail images of HeartLight Designs to load.
