The Triple Crown That Should Have Been

Along with his intense desire for running, Alex's playful disposition remains intact. He enjoys kicking his tetherball and teasing the groomer by grabbing his sleeves. It seems nothing phases the awe inspiring Afleet Alex whose life began with a challenge. Despite the fact that his mother could not produce milk for him, he thrived on bottle feedings and, later, took to his nurse mare quickly.

Winning the Triple Crown is no easy feat as the 28 year drought testifies but it seems a shame when a magnificent horse like Afleet Alex loses to a twist of fate. Watching him open up and pass the other horses like they're standing still is exciting. Watching him go and go and go while others fade is thrilling. His strength, his speed, his heart, definitely deserve a prominent place in thoroughbred racing history.
