As a new dad, you’ve probably got plenty to be thankful for. For one thing, you’re a new dad. Could there be a luckier guy on the face of the earth, let alone here in these United States?
Of course, depending on how old your newborn is, you may be more immediately thankful for more practical things. Like two or more hours of uninterrupted sleep. Or a baby that smiles at you for the first time. Or a chance to sleep in on Thanksgiving to, say, 6:00 a.m. Your wife is probably thankful that she no longer resembles a beached whale. She may even be able to see her toes again. That’s surely something to be grateful about. Who knows, if your newborn is more than six weeks old, you may even get to revisit sexual nirvana again soon. I KNOW that’ll be worth a grateful prayer sent heavenward. Of course, everyone has any number of things for which to be thankful. Here are a few simple suggestions: Be thankful you’re still sane, despite sleep-deprivation torture the likes of which would have made the Viet Kong envious. Be thankful for disposable diapers and wash-n-wear clothes. Be thankful for modern medicines that insure that you needn’t stand by helplessly and watch your loved ones succumb to simple infections. Be thankful for baby monitors that give you peace of mind while allowing you to watch the game with enough volume to hear the plays. Be thankful for frozen pies, canned cranberry sauce and Boston Market, so your wife needn’t worry about cooking on Thanksgiving Day, should she be too overwhelmed to tackle it. Be thankful for ready-mixed formula and canned strained peas. They may look disgusting, but at least you didn’t have to plant, nurture, harvest, cook and mash them yourself. Be thankful for being born, yourself, in a country where you child will grow up truly free. Be thankful that your child WILL one day actually sleep through the night. Be thankful that you have been given a gift that money can’t buy. Be thankful for love, and for life. Amen. Happy Thanksgiving!
