The best way to see the rest of the island is to rent a moped or a car. They are roughly the same price, but the car felt much safer. Lots of people drive mopeds in town, but they can be much harder to maneuver. We compared prices, and the Costa Club had competitive rates for both mopeds and cars.
You can drive along the perimeter of most of the island. There are restaurants here and there along the beach, but mostly it is deserted sand, jungle, and you. It is easy to imagine the Maya that settled on Cozumel 2,000 years ago. Ancient Mayans considered the island a home for the goddess Ixchel, devoted to love and fertility. San Gervaiso is the largest tourable ruin on the island. The entrance fee is around $3 US. A good site to read about San Gervaiso is http://www.mayasites.com/gervasio.html.
There are literally hundreds of diving operations on the island. We went with an independent dive operator, and now wish we would have dived with the hotel. We used Studio Blue, who we found unprofessional and disorganized. Plan on diving with your hotel diving shop unless you get great recommendations for someplace else. The beach in front of Costa Club is a great place to snorkel. Of the snorkeling sites we visited on the island, the beach in front of the hotel was the best free area to snorkel. Plus we could eat and drink for free at the same time. If you have a few free hours, pay a small fee, and tour Chankanab Park. It offers colorful snorkeling, a restaurant, walking trails, shops, and a museum. Mainland Mexico, including Cozumel and Playa de Carmen, is easily accessible from Cozumel. Playa de Carmen can be reached in about 40 minutes by a ferry, which leaves almost every hour. Playa de Carmen also offers great scuba, snorkeling, and shopping. If you want to hang out on the beaches of Cancun for the day, hitch a ride on a ferry for about $8 US. At the end of our stay in Cozumel I was pleasantly surprised that there were no extra charges at the hotel. It is good to be wary, but dont pass up an all-inclusive deal because it seems to good to be true. The best all-inclusive package that travelzoo.com is currently offering is: A 4 Night package to Cozumel starting at $349.00 from different cities. There are nine cities to depart from. The hotels and departure dates offered are different for each city. For more information visit http://dir.travelzoo.com/Vacations.asp?i... or call Costa Travel at 1-800-359-2610.
