If you are on an even tighter budget, there are plenty of hotels in town charging under $50 a night. If you think you can brave the humidity, which really isn’t bad at night if you have a fan, you can find rooms on the island from $35-40 US. When you arrive at Philip Goldson International Airport in Belize City you will have two transportation options to get out to the island. Hourly flights from the Philip Goldson International Airport as well as the Belize City Municipal Airstrip to Ambergris Caye are provided by the local airlines Maya Island Air and Tropic Air. The trip takes about 15 minutes and is one of the best ways to see some of the more than 200 smaller cayes in the area. One-way fares are approximately US$23 from Municipal and US$44 from International, and twice that for round-trip. A taxi from International to Municipal is about US$15. Most hotels on Ambergris Caye will arrange for your air travel to the island at the time you make your hotel reservations.

You can also travel from Belize City to the island by a ferryboat. These are open speedboats with outboard engines with the ride lasting between 45min. and 2 hours depending upon whether there are stops at the other islands in between. This is the cheapest way to Ambergris, around $15.00 U.S. one-way. The ferryboats stop running in the afternoon, so if your flight gets in at 4PM you might be forced to take a plane to the island.
