Green Eggs and Ham.... sort of

Well, I'm actually going to be talking more about the day we celebrate green beer and cabbage, but it's all pretty similar! St. Patrick's Day, March 17th - not exactly a religious holiday to most. I'm sure you'd be hard-pressed to find a handful of people who could actually tell you why St. Patrick has his own day. It has more become a world-wide tradition, by which people are encouraged to wear as much green as possible, and get very silly. Green beer is pretty much standard in all bars on this day, so by some right it has lost it's shock value and is rather expected. But little touches like green marachino cherries might make some people take notice...

This weekend hosts a wide variety of activities to cover all sorts of people: the energetic drinking bunch; the upscale and sophisticated crowd; the mellower folks; and, well, back to the rambunctious ones again. There just really are more things to do for this holiday if you're a drinker.

Let's begin the weekend downtown for the 3rd annual St. Patrick's Day Parade and Concert. Making its way from 4th and Flower at 11am, the festivities end up at Pershing Square (532 S. Olive Street). You will be treated to a show by the Young Dubliners, an act you won't want to miss, and a band we'll talk about more a little later on. If you will be remaining downtown that day, come back at 5:30 for another free concert by the "Royal Crown Revue." (call 213-624-2146 for more information).

Heading further south, Hermosa Beach once again hosts a party of them all. A two-day event, the most outrageous outfits, hair, accessories and drinking talents will be found here. And who can blame them? With our incredible Southern California weather, our beach front strip of bars/restaurants, the "beach" attitude - it's THE place to be. And the whole family can get in on the fun down here. While you might want to retreat with your kids later onto the beach in the sand, or down the street at 11th at the carnival and petting zoo; the parade will begin around 11am at the intersection of Valley and Pier. They will end up at Hermosa Avenue and 18th Street.

Bagpipes, clowns, floats, Irish Setters and all sorts of other stuff will bw on-hand to entertain. Before/after/during the parade - there will be a huge sampling of arts and crafts booths to shop at, and most will offer "green" accessories for your ensemble! We always find a large assortment of green clover fake tattoos, green sunglasses, necklaces - anything you can think of.... the more green, the merrier today!
