Where To Spend The Holidays - Part Two

Okay, in case you didn't find enough entertaining things to do this holiday season in the last article - here are some more suggestions to take you into the new year!

Let's begin with the little ones. At Santa Monica Library, (1343 6th St., (310) 458-8621), they are having a tree trimming party this Friday. Show up a bit before 4pm and the kids can be entertained with songs, crafts, and of course - stories. This a free event.

In Venice, there will be a "Holiday Show" on December 15th and 16th. Come enjoy a complimentary performance with such talent as 'Earthride' and 'Harmony & Pollution'. The live music can be heard at Windward Plaza and Ocean Front Walk (call 310-578-1745 for more information and show times). This wonderful presentation is sponsored by the Venice Arts Mecca, Condor Records, and the City of LA Cultural Affairs.

Now, for those of you that would like an opportunity to voice your own musical talents, join the Delaware Avenue S.D.A. Church on Dec. 15th, 22nd, and 29th for some holiday caroling. Give them a call at 310-450-0919 to find out specifics.

Neither kids nor adults can keep themselves from smiling at the sight of Santa Claus coming down the street. The Santa Monica police and fire departments are escorting St. Nick to all the Santa Monica parks on Sunday, December 16th. From 10:00am to 3:15pm, Santa will travel between five different parks on their tenth annual "Candy Cane Drive" - and they'll be distributing 1000's of the sweet red and white sticks as they go! (310-458-8474).

After the holidays have passed, and it's time to put any holiday trees to rest, let's keep the environment in mind. There are several recycling centers to drop them off at. For information about where the closest location is to you, please call 310-829-7323. What a great deed to do to start off the new year!

And yes, 2002 is closing in on us. There are too many clubs and restaurants in our huge city to list everyone's specials - and perhaps you have friends who are throwing a party anyway; however, if on Tuesday, January 1st, you are looking for something unsual to do or view - listen up. For the last 42 years, the Venice Penguin Club Swim has started off the new year with a splash. As insane as it might sound to some, participants in this event take a New Year's dunk in the ice-cold ocean on an annual basis. Join them on the Venice Beach, between North Venice Blvd. and Windward. The plunge into the ocean will begin roughly at noon - and this is definitely something you won't believe unless you see it for yourself.
