Where To Spend The Holidays - Part One

The holidays are once again upon us, and if you're anything like me, your calendar is starting to fill up. Even in Thailand where I just visited for vacation and is a predominantly Buddhist country, there are numerous Christmas knick-knacks for sale around town. Of course, these are strictly for the tourists; however, it's still ironic that in a country that doesn't even celebrate Christmas, they're already pushing trinkets the month before.

Of course, Christmas is not the only holiday celebrated in December - but it is the holiday with the most publicized events. There are many gatherings that are generic in their "holiday" spirit, and others that are not. I will try to cover a sampling of all events out there in the this and the next article; and mean no offense to anybody that feels that I did not give equal time to all celebrations.

Let's start out with a typical "winter" activity. Ice-skating is fun for the whole family, a group of friends, or even a first date. This year you have a couple of choices of where to glide about on the ice. All are welcome to visit Who-Ville at Universal City Walk, and skate till 11pm during the week and till 1am on weekends for $7.50 per hour/adults and $6.50/children (call for specific directions: 818-622-4455). For those of you with more "particular" tastes, Beverly Hills has an option just for you. At the Civic Center Plaza at 450 N.Rexford Dr., you can skate around till 7pm weekdays and till 8pm on weekends. If you're a Beverly Hills' resident, you get a bargain rate of $10 per hour; but it's $12 for non-residents (call 310-285-2450 for more information).

From one season to another, Knott's Berry Farm glides into new themes. Now through January 6th you can attend "Knott's MERRY Farm" and experience live performances, holiday crafts, and a new ice skating production. If you're interested in helping others this year, just bring a brand new toy that hasn't been opened on Dec. 1, 2, 8, or 9 - and you'll be granted free admission (please make sure the gift is unwrapped). The park is located on Beach Blvd. in Buena Park (714-220-5200).

What about your pets? Don't want to forget them this season - so come to Santa Monica Place on Dec. 5th, from 4-8pm, and your furry pal can get its picture taken with Santa. This might even be early enough that you can get copies of the shot made for your holiday cards (Santa Monica Place: 310-394-1049).
