A Time When Words Can't Do Justice...

As I was preparing to post my current article, the current disaster struck, leaving myself, as so many others, just stunned. How could I write a happy-go-lucky story about how to spend a day in Venice Beach, amisdt the death and destruction that has unfolded? Very simply, I can't.

I can't even contemplate writing such an article at the moment -it seems like such an insensitive act when so many are suffering. Who would possibly be coming to this site at a time like this to find a form of amusement? I know I am not alone when I say that I haven't turned the TV off since yesterday morning. When I wake up, while I get ready for work, sitting at my desk in the office - for the whole day, and again when I get home at night. It's as if I'm possessed, or obsessed with the news.

I'm not quite sure what I'm waiting to hear or see that's different from what's already been aired. What is it that we're watching for? I know so many who have turned off their sets, unable to hear anymore. Why am I not capable of this act? I'm drained - both emotionally and physically - yet the tube stays on.

Due to prior health problems, I am not capable of donating blood - a fact that tears at my heart, as I so want to aid those in need. I have heard of many reports that the blood banks do need food donations for all of the volunteers that are working round the clock - and I have decided that this is how I will spend my lunch hour tomorrow. The craving to do something is so powerful and I don't know where it stems from. There have certainly been other disasters in our country, and I have watched others in need over the years; yet for whatever the reason, there is an overwhelming need within me to contribute, even in a minor way, to this catastrophe.

There is little doubt that almost anyone you talk to knows or knew somebody that is involved in this destruction. I finally got through to one of my friends that lives in New York, just a few hours ago. Her office building is now one of several that are roped off and evacuated, and will remain closed. She had apparently been one of the panicked masses that were running for their lives through the streets, covered from head to toe with ash. It was more than just a casual relief to finally speak to her.
