Metamorphic rocks can form under a variety of conditions. The most common metamorphic rocks form through regional metamorphism, often the result of mountain building events or other large scale tectonic events. Contact metamorphism occurs on a smaller scale and is the result of increases in temperature. Metamorphic rocks, especially those formed through regional metamorphism can be assigned to one of several different metamorphic facies based on the rocks mineralogy. Using this information a geologist can determine much about the conditions under which metamorphism occurred. Go To Page: 1 2 |
