Bookworms in Europe

If you are a writer, journalist, librarian, agent or publisher, then you are undoubtedly familiar with the Frankfurt Bookfair. Maybe you’ve even been lucky enough to attend. For nearly a week every October, Frankfurt hosts the world’s largest international trade fair for publishing. Last year there were more than 2000 events during the fair, with 1100 of them involving authors. So it does seem like there is something for everyone—if you like books that is.

But even if you are not a professional of some sort, but someone who just likes to read, it would definitely be worthwhile to stop in if you happen to be in the neighborhood. This year the Frankfurt Fair will be held October 10-15, 2001. The guest of honor this year is Greece.

They have a fantastic website with links galore, which is much more information than I can squeeze into this little article. Check out the Frankfurt-Bookfair.

There are also a number of other bookfairs being held in Europe this fall. While Frankfurt is the undisputed leader, you may want to check out the others if you're going to be in the neighborhood.

Going to Russia? The Moscow 13th International Bookfair will be held September 5-10.

While you’re up there in the north, you might want to come over to Sweden for the Göteborg International Book Fair, held on September 13-16.

Going to Europe in October? There’s plenty to see for the bookworm. Of course, there’s Frankfurt, but if you plan on being further south, then there’s the Belgrade - 46th International Book Fair held October 23-29 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia.

There’s also a bookfair in sunny Lisbon, Portugal, the Expolingua Portugal 2001 held October 25-27.

Heading into November, the booksellers are still quite busy. The Flanders Book Fair, is being held in Antwerp, Belgium on November 1-11.

November 3-11 is the 19th Istanbul Book Fair, held in Turkey. Some consider Turkey to be part of Europe, others don’t. But I’m including it.

It’s starting to get a little chilly in this part of the world, but should you happen to be in Eastern Europe, there’s the th Bibliotheka 2001 in Bratislava, Slovakia on November 8-11.

Stick around Eastern Europe because there’s the in Bucharest, Romania, November 21-25.

The Salon du livre de jeunesse, a bookfair for children’s books, is held in Montreuil, France, November 38-December 3.

And last, from December 11-15 (just in time to buy some Christmas presents—books make nice gifts!) is the International Book Fair is Sofia, Bulgaria.
