The Homestead Allowance

In most states the homestead exemption is automatic, nothing needs to be done to have the homestead declaration recorded to be able to claim this exemption. In some states, you must file a Declaration of Homestead form with the County Recorder’s or Registry of Deeds office. By going on the internet and visiting your state's "official" website, you should be able to find information on Homesteads. As an alternative, check with your state’s Probate and Family Court or Registry of Deeds to see if you this exemption is automatic, or if you need to file a form
