SOE The Beginning Part Six.

As the war lingered on, there seemed no quick end to the conflict, the Nazis had dug in and were holding their lines.

The Special Operations Executive with its new training centre in Canada and alliance with the United States intelligence service has plans to further their battle with the German high command; a fantastical plan was hatched where if successful would end the Nazis and the war.

Operation Foxley, was the ultimate plan, its purpose was to assassinate Adolf Hitler the nazi leader, his death would SOE believed end the war. The plan in itself was simple, Hitler spent a lot of time at his mountain retreat “The Eagles Nest” in Berchtesgaden, where most of the nazi leaders and staff officers had a house, it was the heart of nazi Germany, the very sole of the nazi dream and a place where they all felt that they could relax and most importantly of all, be safe from the war. A straight forward raid on the building was impossible, even though Hitler felt safe there, his loyal bodyguards had created a kill zone around the building, that way nobody would be able to approach the building without being seen.

However intelligence sources had noted that Hitler every afternoon would walk from “The Eagles Nest” down the to a tea room at the bottom of the hill, so relaxed was he, that he ordered no bodyguards and would only be accompanied by a guest, friend or whoever had been invited to the leaders weekend retreat. They would stay for tea and then a car would pick them up and take them back to the heavily guarded house. This is where Operation Foxley would come into action, two teams were to be sent into Germany, and one would be set up with a high powered, telescopic sighted rifle, where from a vantage point beyond the kill zone, Hitler could be struck down. The other team would be armed with a more powerful weapon, a bazooka or rocket launcher, should the first team fail or find themselves unable to complete the mission, the second team would take out the car as it took Hitler back to the house, the plan could not fail, Hitler would be assassinated one way or another.

The plan was approved by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, but as the plan began to be set into action, it was called off at the last minute, the certain elimination of Adolf Hitler was cancelled, the reason? It was thought by the Allied high command that with Hitler in place, there was more chance that his own Generals would assassinate him and if they did not, Hitler was thought to be the weakest link the German High command, he himself would cause more damage to the nazis than his assassination would do.
