The Romeo Agents.Take a city somewhere in Europe, just after the World War, split it into four unequal pieces, three of which house the most decadent societies you could image and the other containing a totalitarian state, surround all of these with the communist block and you have Berlin, spy capital of the world. There were many things happening throughout the cold war era, but one of the most effective and subtle way of gaining information for the East German intelligence service was the "Romeo Agent" his job was to seduce a certain type of woman, normally someone who was weak or desperate, she would be wined and dined, shown a life that she could only have ever dreamed of, eventually she would fall in love with this clever and manipulative man, then the bomb shell. Blackmail! The woman was confronted by the East German Intelligence who told the woman that she would never see her lover again unless she started work for them, she would have no choice, she was in love, a person in love would do anything to protect her lover. This was a well thought out and maintained plan which was played out many times during the seventies and eighties. After the shock of being blackmailed the women would be trained in a skill such as secretarial, linguist or something along those lines, when "Qualified" she would go to an arranged position within a "Western" organisation where she would work as if she was a normal West German, but with a mission to gain information requested by her East German blackmailers. Upon a satisfactory supply of secret information, the women could be rewarded with a weekend break in the Austrian Alps with her lover. This would only fuel the desire to gain more and more information in order to be able to meet up for a few precious hours. In some case a woman would caught by West German Intelligence and in several cases the woman would be so affraid to tell the truth as she feared it would put her lover in jeopardy and would never see him again. However this would not be the case, as the lover had always worked for East German Intelligence, and the whole affair had been manipulated from the start, there was no love from the lovers point of view, he was just doing a job of work and had a string of women on the go at one time. But those who were caught spent several long hard years in prison only find out that there lovers were in fact just "Romeo Agents"
