Rejoice news junkies. If you have nothing to do, hate your local newspaper and want to avoid recycling newsprint, the Web has environmental news for you. Lots of it. Tons of it. More than you can ever read, in fact. You can use search engines for news at most of these sites. At some you can create your own newspaper and jump to it from your bookmark list or personal web page. Some sites will even deliver headlines to you by e-mail so you'll know when to "pick up the paper." If you have a laptop and a long phone cord, you can even take your electronic newspaper into the bathroom.

  • Earth Times. Simply an excellent on-line environment newsmagazine with sections on Africa, Asia, the Americas and Global Leaders. Highly recommended for content, design, speed and options for reading and searching. A "Best of Web" worth far more than the price of its free admission.

  • Excite. Search or create your own newspaper and train it to recognize your interests.. Highly recommended. Responsive and well designed although a bit cluttered until you figure out what you are doing. Trains quickly to your news interests. Excite's pre-selected topics are also a gold mine as these examples suggest.

    • Planet Earth Bones, Earth Science, Earthquakes & Volcanoes, Environment, Geology, Oceanography, Research Institutes, Resources, Weather & Climate. Each leads you to more specialty items.

    • Environment Subtopics: Air Quality, Biodiversity, Endangered Species, Habitats, Research Institutes, Resources, Waste Management, Water.

    • Excite's Lifestyles Subtopics: Action Alerts/By Region, Animal Rights, Biodiversity , Eco-Friendly Businesses & Products, Endangered Species, Envirocopia: Sundry, Eco-Information, Environmental Law, Environmental Rights, Groups & Organizations, Publications, Sustainable Practices & Communities.

  • Infoseek. Browse pre-selected environmental topics, create your own newspaper or use the search engine. Recommended.
