Environment Books to Consider

What do they say? "Be all you can be. Read"

Oh if there only was time to do all the reading I'd like to do. But what with fixing computers all the time, reading the abundance of environment news on the web, and hunting around at web sites of all kinds, time is nonexistent.

A book catalog arrived the other day and I decided to look up the publisher's web site. I thought some folks might be interested in what I found on page one at Island Press. The text is verbatim from the web site. Follow the links to see the depth of information available at this web site. Keep in mind that this page may change by the time you read this, but I hope the links are preserved. If not, trot off to the site yourself and look around.

Conserving Earth's Biodiversity. CD-ROM with E.O. Wilson

The Conserving Earth's Biodiversity CD-ROM is an entirely new way to study and teach conservation biology and environmental science. Created from the ground up to make the most of today's multimedia technology, it provides a rich learning experience and a wealth of valuable information and materials -- including interactive models that allow learners to study dynamic systems, detailed maps, and links to resources on the World Wide Web -- that build upon and enhance traditional approaches to the subject. Conserving Earth's Biodiversity is a pioneering educational tool based on the teachings and writings of renowned biologist Edward O. Wilson, and created and developed by science educator Dan Perlman.

Eco-Compass: Sprawl Cities The pattern of random, unplanned growth commonly known as `sprawl' is a pervasive feature of the American landscape. While it has become the most common form of development surrounding cities and suburbs, hardly anyone would describe it as ideal. In fact, according to a recent Pew Center poll, sprawl has surpassed education and jobs as American's greatest local concern. (New York Times, March 3, 2000)

This Eco-Compass feature provides a summary of the major issues relating to Sprawl as well as an examination of the lessons that can be learned from the experience of Atlanta. Also included are links to related publications and over 50 of the best Sprawl related websites.

Also of interest at the Island Press site, again verbatim:

Eco-Compass -- The Internet Guide to Environmental Information Eco-Compass presents an overview of information on a wide range of environmental topics with links to scores of related sites and other sources of in-depth information. Organized into the broad categories of Ecosystems, Communities, Global Change, and Economics, we provide introductions to the key areas of concern within each category along with detailed features that summarize current issues and point the way to more information. All features are fully hyper-linked to exploit the incredible power of the World Wide Web and the vast range of information available.
