1997 Suite 101 Environment Wrap up

Season's Greetings and Happy New Year.

One problem with reviewing environmental topics and web sites is that almost as fast as I cover a topic, someone adds a new site — and doesn't tell me. I keep running into web sites on topics I covered and think to myself "add them to my site lists." But time prevents this. I have piles of disorganized printouts scattered all over the place. So much for the paperless office. What I need is software that gives me an easy way to add the sites. Any recommendations? Meanwhile, I'm going to wrap up 1997 by listing a few of the follow-up sites I ran into. These sites are listed in no particular order.

Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network — For a starter, see International Year of the Coral Reef from September.

Snake Barriers Helping Halt Brown Tree Snakes applies to my article on alien species invasions.

Los Angeles Times environment stories. Great addition to my review of environmental news.

CNN Environment pages. Another good source of environmental news.

GAIA Forest Conservation Archives on Indonesian forest fires — There were quite a number of other follow-up articles I haven't gotten around to listing.

Local dentists learning to prevent pollution — This article follows up on my discussion of mercury poisoning. I also ran into Babies of women who ate whale meat suffer mercury poisoning.

Forest songbirds avoid clearcuts relates to my review of the excellent island biogeography book Song of the Dodo, my absolute favorite book of 1997. I bought five and mailed three to friends in SE Asia where some of the book's action takes place. If you have a late Christmas gift to give, or an upcoming birthday, order a copy from Amazon.com. Amazon has great discounts and your book arrives in a day or two.

I hopped on the endangered frog issue on Jan. 24, 97 and Jan. 31, 97. Come back right after New Years — for an update article on deformed frogs.

One-third of marine species overfished, NMFS says, follows up on my articles Six Groups Pool Resources to Save Fish, Swim Little Fishies, Swim if You Can.... and Endangered Sharks.

My article on tigers can be followed up off the Web in the December 1997 issue of National Geographic. This article caught the eye of the TV media and was featured on one or two shows. I also ran across a paragraph in The Earth Times that said a 220-pound tiger killed 100 people in western Nepal over 10 months but was finally tracked and killed. Meanwhile, on the Web you can find out lots about tigers at World Wildlife Fund.
