Environmental News Network: Five Stars

ENN, the Environmental News Network, is a real winner; a site to bookmark. Not only can you surf it to read environmental news, but if you want, you can have that news delivered to your e-mail for off-line browsing. All you need then is a morning cup of coffee.

In addition to carrying environmental news, ENN links you to web sites by topics that include atmosphere and weather, earth sciences, ecology and biology, education, energy, hazardous waste, land, law, waste management and water. You can also link to the federal government, states, cities, universities, institutes and associations, special interest groups, the United Nations and foreign sites.

One of ENN's cool pages is called Factoids, which contains a list of environmental facts that could be good subject matter for awkward silent moments when you have nothing to say to someone. "Hey, did you know that according to ENN . . . ."

ENN is a bit obscure with its link category called "Channels." No. Not the English Channel. No. Not television channels. It's ENN's name for a short list of links to other sites, some of which are worth knowing about. This is where I ran into ECOTECH, which bills itself as" an independent, not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping future-looking individuals and businesses develop, disseminate, and integrate earth-centered thinking in a manner that facilitates productivity, profits and environmental responsibility. Ecotech holds a world-class conference once every three years to bring together a diverse group of leaders and thinkers representing business, academia, finance, science, government and activism to exchange innovative ideas and discuss opportunities created by contemporary environmental challenges and technologies. Previous ECOTECH conferences were held in 1991 and 1994." It's too late for this year's conference, but maybe next time . . . . I leave it to you surfers to evaluate the site for its value.

Green Business Letter covers government assistance, programs for business, ratings of green business web sites, a calendar and environmental events.

One link to a company site is the Global Action Information Center, but this site has distanced itself from surfers who lack Java, so for now it is not a recommended site. ENN also turned up the National Park Foundation..

For environmental news alone, this site is "a keeper."
