NRDC and EDF

Hunting around the site, I'll quote you what I found out about the following interesting facts about batteries.
  • For common sizes, AAA through D, it's best to buy reusable alkaline batteries. They can be recharged over and over, 25 times or more, which saves money and resources. And they're not made with toxic cadmium like old-style nickel cadmium (NiCd) rechargeable batteries.

  • Alkaline batteries, whether single-use or reusable, aren't being recycled at present, so you'll have to throw them out with the trash. That's why reusable alkalines are better, because you throw away one battery instead of 25!

  • Always look for batteries that say, "No mercury added." Mercury is another toxic metal that's best to avoid.

  • If you use "button cells" in a watch or camera, bring the used batteries back to jewelry or camera shops, which often collect them for their mercury or silver content.

  • CT, MN, NJ, NY and VT have passed laws requiring industry to reduce the mercury in alkaline batteries and to take back rechargeables and button cells. Demand such legislation in your state!
