Earth Day 2000 and Grist Mag

With the new year almost upon us, I'm going to give readers a jump on Y2K Earth Day (Sat., April 22) by pointing to the Earth Day web site. I suggest that you check it periodically to see what's going on. This site is a big improvement over past Earth Day sites. I hope it gets even better.

You may want to check out Earth Day Events to see if something is going on in your area. If it isn't, you and your buddies might want to jump in and get something started. You've got plenty of time. Best of all, if you check out what other groups listed at the web site are doing you can get ideas about what you might do. There are at least a few suggestions form other parts of the world broken down by continent. When you get to North America, it's broken down by state. I checked out my state and found only one entry-Philadelphia. I guess we're not exactly the environmental hot spot of the world. California, however, offers quite a few sites.

The most welcome addition to the Earth Day Network site is a news service, Grist Magazine. This is a daily news service you can subscribe to for free. I'm overloaded with environmental news from e-mail subscriptions but this one is worth looking at. In fact, it's the first one I've seen where I found myself thinking, "I'd like to write for this service."

What you get at one part of Grist Magazine are one-paragraph briefs culled from regular newspapers and magazines with a link to the original story. The editors are kind to readers, telling you when a news service link isn't free. I like that. It saves me from wasting time if I don't want to pay the toll.

What's sneaky aboutGrist is the tiny type in a left-hand menu bar. These are links to other resources, such as book recommendations. I took a look at an intriguing title Busted! to discover a critique about advertising by the plastics industry. I like the interactive touch the web gurus added, but I'll let you visit and find it for yourself. Likewise, find and click on "Ha."

I also like One Stop Climate Shop where you can discover "everything you ever wanted to know about climate change." Also check in on Muckraker, for "Juicy tidbits about who's who and what's what on the enviro scene." Well written.
