Diverse Resources
Peter S. (I'll protect his identify) e-mailed me a tip to look at The Committee for the National Institute for the Environment, which houses a National Library for the Environment. The main headings are "Briefing Books," "Congressional research Service Reports," and "Environmental Virtual Libraries." This site wasn't built for the casual environmentalist and there is an awful lot there.
The current briefing books cover global climate change, ocean and coastal resources, electric utility restructuring, and summaries of laws administered by the EPA. The real discovery I made at this site, however, was The Daily Planet, a collection of links to environmental news services: Environmental News Network, Earth Vision Environmental News, Reuter's Daily Environmental News, Environmental Update Daily stories collected by Excite, Global Network of Environment and Technology's daily news summaries and stories, Institute for Global Communications Alternative stories from a wide variety of sources, Environmental News Digests from Capitol Reports, Energy and Environment News from the Common Purpose Institute for Energy and Environmental Solutions, Environment News Service Summaries and full story, Envirolink News Service, Environmental & Related Topics, Summaries of news stories from the Defenders of Wildlife via other organizations and mainstream sources. Almost hidden at the bottom of this links page is a link to Online News Sources Throughout the World, a long list that includes quite a number of environmental news sites, journals and other information resources. This list is a great resource that deserves a bookmark. Salton Sea
Another e-mailer, Steve Horvitz, Superintendent, Salton Sea Sector of the California State Parks, tipped me off about a new web site on the Salton Sea, which I had written about in January 1998. Steve calls it "Salton Sea 101," and it is just that, a basic introduction to the Salton Sea, its users, ecology, and problems. The site is enjoyable because it is written in a friendly style as if Steve was standing in front of you talking to you. I like it. Steve's section headings are as follows: It's the Salt!; Or is it Nutrient Loading?; Oxygen!; Algae - the Good, the Bad and the Ugly; How Many Fish are Too Many Fish?; What Smell?; Water, Water Everywhere . . . but not for long . . .; and Debunking the Myths. National Safety Council-Environmental Health Center
Another site I think you should bookmark is the National Safety Council's Environmental Health Center Environmental
Information Links page. This is a five-star no nonsense site that gives you more links than you can surf in a sitting or three. Here you can find links on Air, Chemicals, Children's Pages, Climate, Energy, Health, Land Use, Risk Management, Waste, Water and Wildlife. These examples will give you an idea of the entries, they're really useful:
