Environment News Service at Lycos scores five stars for putting up a comprehensive news site that offers environment junkies a wide range of activities in addition to pure news. You can personalize your site for your zip code and get all kinds of automated information feed. Lycos wants to be your start-up home page on the web, advertisements and all. News, weather, scores, lottery, stocks, contacts (yours), community, people finder, favorite links, web guide and your own home page - yours for the asking.
Environment web sites ties you in to two major topics, ecology and geology, and eight lesser link topics: Earth Science Institutes, Earth Sciences, Environment and Nature, Online Resources, Organizations, Publications, Rainforests and Solar Energy. These subsections appear to take advantage of the Lycos search engine function by providing you with lists of top-rated sites. One of the most interesting sections, the press release link, lists an assortment of environmental press releases on a wide range of topic. Press releases are what they are, self-interest announcements by various organizations with news they wish to hype to the press. But you can find interesting topics to read and many don't make it into the regular press. Don't scoff at such releases. I like press releases because they give you an unfiltered insight into what's going on. The press releases come from E-Wire, which is related to PR-Wire, a well-known place to release your news to a wide range of newspapers and magazines that subscribe to the service. I also like the Environment News Service Index, where I found "Kathmandu Environmentalists Try Radio." This article interested me because I have environmentalist friends who live there, I've been there, and I once sat down to talk with the entire staff of an environmental television station in Tanzen, Nepal. There was far more news to read than I could ever even attempt here. And you can subscribe to a "Free ENS Daily News Feed by Email" just like those from ENN and Planetark. I also like the calendar of environmental events section. As with press releases, these can give you another inside view on what's going on around the world in environment besides what appears in the news. It is impressive to read about all the organizations that are holding meetings, seminars and other activities you never hear about. A full-time environmental writer would have no trouble finding subjects to write about. Go To Page: 1 2
