How to Stay Ahead of the News Media

For anyone who is hungry for environmental news, the Web provides enough to overload your brain. There's no way to keep up, but if you're one of the hungry ones and have read some of these previous environmental columns, you know we talked about environmental news sources.

If you want to stay ahead of the news media, keep an eye on the nongovernment organizations (NGOs — the "not-for-profits") and follow their campaigns — their projects. Many NGOs tend to specialize in one or a few environmental subjects or issues following them closely even when they aren't making "big" news. Unfortunately there's simply no Web search engine to bring back information for you from NGOs and it seems that a lot of them don't code their files so that the search engines find them easily. You'll have to hunt for things yourself, but you can use a shortcut for this by keeping an eye on the press releases and action alerts issued by these NGOs. They often predate issues covered by the traditional news media, often by months, sometimes by years.
