Surviving The Console Wars, Part II

NOTE: This article was supposed to be posted a couple of weeks back, however I apparently made an error when posting it (or I simply spaced on actually posting it), and so here it is, slightly belated. I'll have part III ready shortly for your reading pleasure, so stay tuned.

Continuing on with our in-depth look into the upcoming video game console wars, this week we are going to cover newcomer to the video game wars, Microsoft’s X-Box. Arguably the most powerful of the new generation, but do they have the know-how to pull off the major upset of the current video game rulers? Only time will tell, but hopefully this article will give you some clues to look for.

Graphics Power:

First of all let me thank IGN.com for their very concise list of system specs, which I will be using to provide the numbers you see. The conclusions, however, are entirely mine, and may not agree with the fine folks over at IGN.

Please also bear in mind that these numbers have been provided by Microsoft, so you can rest assured that they are likely to round up whenever needed. I’ll try to help you understand the difference between specifications and actual performance as we go along. Often times a number may look impressive, however if you look at it in the aspect of the bigger picture, it may not actually be as earth-shattering as you would have originally believed. So how can you separate reality from hype? Well one way would be to read on.

So of course we know the most important aspect of any new console system is the kind of graphics it can display. In fact, pretty much the only reason to create a new console is in order to enhance on the previous generation’s graphics. For the last 10 years the various video game companies have battled over this increasingly competitive area, and the result has been stunning leaps in the realism of each new game. From pong, whose entire graphic content consisted of a white line in the middle, and two smaller white lines batting a white square back and forth across a black background, to today’s 3-Dimensional gaming environments, whose realism rivals that of real life at times. All this in just a couple short decades. History has shown an increasing rapidity in the development of new technologies. The main reason being that each new technology has made it easier to develop the next step, thereby creating a snowball effect.
