And then he adds a zinger:

"At the same time, many effective, experienced clowns are getting out of costume to avoid professional association with the flood of imposters who have taken over the ranks and driven the perceived value of clowning so low as to almost preclude the realistic chance of making a living from clowning."

Hmmm...sounds like eBay. One of my friends, who buys and sells historical papers, mentioned recently that the unknowledgeable "dealers" now populating the online site have so driven down the perceived value of paper artifacts that they're ruining the industry.

David isn't try to be mean by his comment.

Rather, he's drawing a line in the sand: That like every other industry that wants to be taken seriously, there must be standards. A clown is supposed to be funny. No grumpiness allowed.

Let me share another "Davidism": Audiences really don't care what clowns look like; they just want to be entertained.

"They don't much care about your costume and shoes," writes David. "They readily accept clowns who don't do magic or balloons or stilt walking. Audiences have only one unyielding demand of clowns and that is comedy."

Are you clowning for the right reasons?

If you've been at it a while, do you remember what you're supposed to be accomplishing? If you're no longer laughing...and if your audiences are no longer chuckling with you, perhaps it's time to take a break.

Swim with the dolphins; drink Mai Tai's by the waves. Do whatever it takes to find your happy clown again. We'll be waiting to welcome you back!

Be a clown!

Sincerely, Contributing Editor Sheri Bell-Rehwoldt ("Piper" the Clown)
