I have agreed to accompany a friend on a two-week holiday in north-west Scotland this month. I rarely take two-week holidays for fear of what I might return to. So I've been preparing as best I can, by doing the jobs that I know will be most important, first like supporting my delphiniums and lilies. This has been followed by lots of pruning and training of rose and clematis shoots. Finally there will be the inevitable watering of pots outside in the garden followed closely by the many pots inside the house. It seems going on any holiday for me requires lots of work and a great deal of nerve.

The weather in May continues in the main to be kind. We have had a fair amount of warm sunshine. This has also brought more butterflies, like the lovely Speckled Wood, which has now become a very familiar visitor of the garden in summer. The first roses are well ahead of the June crowd. Here at least, it promises to be a bumper rose season.

I have promised myself to sit a while before I leave and enjoy the garden for a change. The garden in early summer is so fresh and full of promise that it seems a crime to leave. But, leave I must and who knows what surprises will greet me on my return?
