Lonicera or the honeysuckles are probably at their best just now. Some are deciduous, whilst others evergreen or semi evergreen. Their tubular flowers are their crowing glory on the scent front. One particular favourite of mine is L. japonica ‘Halliana’. The flowers of this semi-evergreen form are white ageing to pale-yellow. The fragrance is outstanding and spreads for yards on warm summer evenings. After the flowers small black shiny berries grace the shrub.

I cannot finish this fragrant discourse without mentioning Lilies. The ‘Regal Lily’ or Lilium regale. Large white trumpets, each producing a superb heavy scent that you could almost cut from the air. These lilies take to pot cultivation well, so can moved around at will.

For the herb fanatics amongst you, there is an infinite variety to choose from. Thyme, rosemary and santolina, are probably the best of a rather unruly bunch.

The delicious world of garden scents is full of sensual pleasure and fun just waiting to be discovered and enjoyed. When the next warm evening of this summer comes along, relax in a comfortable chair, close your eyes and sniff the air. In no time at all you will be drifting off to a soothing world of orange groves in the setting sun.

If scents really are the souls of flowers as one elderly Frenchman once wrote, it also means they are destined for immortality.
