Training Mastiff Puppies, Part I - House Training

Remember, too, that if you have confined your puppy to a carpeted area, there just might be an accident. If you confine them to an area where there is furniture, they just might chew on the furniture. So this is narrowing down your choices. This is why I highly recommend getting a crate for your puppy! Just ignore all those people who say that a puppy would NEVER eliminate in their crate because mine will and have. And remember again that patience is a virtue.

The concept of crate training is that the puppy will not potty in their crate. Crates can be expensive, however, so when you buy one for your Mastiff puppy, you will want to buy a large one. This makes the whole concept of the crate not work because a small puppy has lots of extra room in a Mastiff-sized crate. For this reason, you'll also want to buy a crate that has a divider wall in it so that you can adjust the size of the crate to the growth of your puppy. Then, you can just crate your puppy when you can't pay close enough attention to them. Remember, though, to take your puppy straight outside when you let them out of the crate, even if they have pottied in the crate already. You will also want to take them outside BEFORE you ever put them into the crate in the first place!

Even though it might not seem like it if your puppy is 6-8 weeks old, your puppy WILL eventually get the hang of all this and become a wonderful dog who would never DARE go potty in your house! Just be persistent with your training, give lots of love and praise when your puppy successfully potties outside, and maybe give them a small treat when you come back inside - Mastiffs will do ANYthing for a treat!

I also take my dogs to the same spot every single time I take them outside because this will teach them where it is okay to go outside. If you have a male dog, you can also teach them to urinate on a specific post that you've set in place, and this will help save a few of your trees!

When there is an accident in the house, take the puppy outside immediately, and then be sure to scrub up the spot with
