Grooming Your Mastiff

  • Small scissors
All dogs have hair between the pads of their feet. When you take a poodle to the groomer, the groomer uses electric trimmers to trim the hair out, but with mastiffs, you can clip that hair out with a small pair of scissors. If your dog is nervous or jumpy about this, don't try it! It's really a preventative measure to keep the hair from matting and causing discomfort, but I haven't had that problem with my mastiffs.

  • Brush
Mastiffs shed! It seems to me like they shed every month of the year except for maybe June. If you give them a gentle brushing each day, this will cut down on the shedding, as will giving them their weekly bath. Slicker brushes work great, but my mastiffs have hated them! I use a regular soft paddle brush now. It picks the hair up very well, and my mastiffs are enjoying their brushing experience.

  • Treats
Bribery will get you everywhere with a mastiff! Be sure to reward them after their bath, and maybe they'll look forward to it more the next time!

Where & How to Bathe Your Mastiff

The summer months are easy on you as your dog's groomer! You can use a hose and bathe them outside. Macy is still not quite sure that the bath won't kill her, so I have to leash her during her bath. Chesty stands still and waits on his treat. My only problem with him is that he wants to cuddle during his bath, which gets us both sopping wet!

The winter months are tougher! I have to put them in the tub. I've found that it is much easier on them if I put a slip-free mat in the bottom of the tub so that they don't slide all over. Mastiffs aren't known for their grace, and if they slip in the tub, they can be injured! They're also hard to maneuver, so again, I hook up the hose and bring it to the tub to make it easier.

When washing any dog, there are steps to get them good and clean. First, you'll wet them down thoroughly. Then, soap them up one quick time and give them a good scrub. Rinse them thoroughly, and do it all again! That first wash will remove surface dirt, and the second wash will clean them thoroughly. If you're using a tar-based or other therapeutic shampoo, you'll want to let them soak for about
