Coat and Color

There are some variations in the coat length of the Mastiff. I have seen gorgeous Mastiffs with a thick, plush coat that you could sink your fingers into, but most I've seen have a short, straight, coarse coat. There are even Mastiffs with long hair, like the St. Bernard's. Standard says that too short or too long is not acceptable, warning against coats long enough to fringe at the belly, tail, or hind legs.

The standard colors are fawn, brindle, and apricot. Regardless of coat color, the muzzle, ears, nose, and area around the eyes should always be dark, as black as possible. A small patch of white is acceptable on the brindles and toes, though too much is a fault.

So that's what your Mastiff should look like, though there will be slight differences in each and every one. As you see with our Chesty, perfect is in the eyes of the beholder!

Information on the breed standard was gathered from the AKC
and from the book An Owner's Guide to the Mastiff by John M. Becknell.
