Summer's Cooler Side

Want some cool, relaxing activities that will be fun for mom and dad, yet will be fun for the kids as well? Take these ideas for a whirl:

Think about a tour of a local art gallery. It’s a perfect, hot summer afternoon getaway. As you look at the pictures, perhaps have your kids come up with stories that the pictures seem to be telling. It’ll be fun and educational. You could do this by looking up artwork on the World Wide Web as well, but it probably won’t have as much of an impact as real-life artwork will.

Visit your local library. Displays and summer programs usually are on the agenda, plus it’ll give mom and dad an opportunity to find some reading material as well. When mom and dad read, kids read. Try this for a change: turn off the television for a night or two. Or be real wild and crazy and try it for a week!! For an on-line book adventure, look at last month’s article.

Visit a local nature center. Many times there are interesting programs available for the entire family. And don’t forget about the zoo. Yes, it’s fun, but animals can teach us a lot.

And for those of you in truly remote areas or even for those of you who have lots of activities to choose from…try an evening walk. It can turn up some interesting sights from flowers to bugs. Perhaps keep a book on wildflowers or insects handy.

Any other ideas…please pass them along.
