Book Adventure for the Summer

© Bridget Slayden

What do your kids have planned for the summer??? Before they BOOK every last second with television, swimming, and biking, you may want to encourage them to join Book Adventure: an online reading program that rewards young bookworms!! In fact, even if your child is far from a bookworm, he/she might get motivated enough through this program to become one.

Book Adventure was created in order to fight against a disturbing national problem: illiteracy. The program is supported by Sylvan Learning Centers, Sylvan Learning Foundation, BarnesandNoble.com, .R.R Bowker Company, Houghton Mifflin, and Lycos, Inc and many others.

So, exactly what is Book Adventure? For a first-hand look, surf to http://www.bookadventure.org You will meet Bailey Bookmark, an adorable dog and Rex Reader, a lovable dinosaur, both will guide students on their journey through the site. Basically students will create a personalized book list (dependent on the student interest), find the books at a local library and read them, then go back to the computer to take related quizzes (many schools already have programs similar to this one, but this one allows students to read during the summer!). Students will earn rewards based on the number of books they read and how well they do on the quizzes. But some kids don’t have computers/internet, you say? No problem. Most libraries have computers with Internet access. And helpful librarians who will be happy to lend a hand.

Not only is Book Adventure an excellent place for students to visit, but parents and teachers will also enjoy the resources. Parents, your resources include: Book Collection (where you can help your child build his/her book collection), Events and Outreach (learn more about initiatives and events that promote reading), Educational links, Family Edutainment (fun activities for the whole family), Home Schooling (set your curriculum; find organizations in your area), Homework Helper, Library Learning, Parent Enrichment, and Reading Challenges ( how to recognize and work on challenges your child might be facing). Teachers, your resources include: Book Awards and Reviews, Events, Issues and Topics (conferences, seminars, discussions), Educational Links, Edutainment (activities for the classroom), Teachers Toolbox, Create a Class Website (links help you create a free site to promote education in your classroom), Library Learning, Parent Participation (find great tips and ideas to get your students’ parents involved) and Reading Challenges (learn to recognize and work on challenges your students might be facing).

I highly encourage you to bookmark http://bookadventure.org and enjoy its benefits throughout the summer as well as throughout the school year.
