This month I had a hard time deciding if I should focus on the presidential race or if I should stick with the holidays, namely Thanksgiving. The presidential race this year is one of special interest simply because there seems to be no sure winner. I’m going to say that the writing possibilities regarding the issues, debates, and overall campaigning would be varied and interesting. In fact, even after the votes have been tallied and our new president waiting for January and his new beginning…the writing, satire, and discussion will most likely be interesting still. Use the presidential race to spark interest in writing, public speaking, acting, satire, or propaganda.
However, I decided I’d rather look up sites that had the holiday flair after all. Thanksgiving is one of the holidays I find extremely memorable from elementary school. I still remember making our Indian vests out of brown paper bags and creating headbands equipped with feathers. I still remember my first nibble of cornbread. (Yes, I come from a family that never makes cornbread—however, I have changed that). I remember discussing the Pilgrims and the Indians…a topic I still find exciting today. And all that from my first grade class. To help create Thanksgiving memories for your classrooms, I’ve found several sites that should be helpful. For some reason, when you tie real-life and school together, children are more likely to learn and remember. Ignoring the major holidays would be doing a disservice to your students…American history can be tied to every subject. I hope you find these sites helpful.
