Discover Tampareads.comAs a new school year gets underway, it's not surprising to find a few frustrations along the way. A teacher who found the struggle between Whole Language and Phonics almost too much to bear recently emailed me. The kids weren't learning to read; they were merely learning to recognize pictures. Yet, hardly anyone seemed to notice. For those of you stuck in a system, which perhaps doesn't offer different approaches, or materials for students struggling to read, I've discovered a web site that you might like to view. http://www.Tampareads.com. WHAT I'VE DISCOVERED Tampareads.com offers reading support activities and worksheets for students K-4. In fact, older students who struggle with reading may benefit from these materials. Note: some of the materials can be used free of charge, others require a small fee. Alphabet Memorizing Worksheets: Each worksheet teaches a different letter of the alphabet using a "memorable character" and other memorizing strategies. Specific learning activities use name and sound of letter practice as well as writing of letter. Spatial skills are also included. Phonics Activity Worksheets: Worksheets for teaching phonics and phonemic awareness skills...short and long vowels, r-controlled vowels, digraphs, and diphthongs, and so on. Vocabulary Building: Recognition memory, scrambled letters, and sentence writing comprise these 20-minute worksheet activities. Wordlists: Basically lists of words that every K-4 grader should know. In addition, there are reading files for K-4 grade as well as wonderful articles that discuss/debate the Phonics vs. Whole Language issue. Simply a good web site for anyone dealing with the reading issue in our schools.
