A Back-to-School Activity!3. After everyone has finished, the next activity can begin. Randomly assign partners. It is best if these partners are not best friends. Students are then required to formulate questions that they will ask their partners. Some should be related to the objects brought to class, others can be basics (birth date, city of birth) or originals. Be original, but don't get too personal. 4. Next, have students interview one another. When all the questions have been asked, each student is then required to write a short biography on his or her partner. 5. Students are then required to draw (to the best of their ability) the head of their partner. This should be fun!! Just where are we going with this? These heads, which should be colored will then be fitted into a pop-up book with the biographies as the book's text. I did one for each class I had. Believe it or not, these books turned out beautifully! (Duration 4 to 5 one-hour class periods). I used these books at the first open house of the school year and the parents appeared to enjoy them as well. They were the first item the students wanted to show their parents! They are excellent for any age K-12. You may have to convince the older students that there is nothing wrong with having a little bit of fun, but most end up enjoying it. The procedure itself utilizes so many important skills including: public speaking, creativity, note-taking, biography writing, interviewing, planning, and teamwork. Autobiographies are always another option. Whatever you decide to do on the first day, show some forethought, you students will appreciate it!
