In my quest to find the best web sites for English teachers K-12, I discovered a Super Highway for kids - Alphabet Super Highway that is. This site comes under the sponsorship of the US Department of Education's Read*Write*Now! Alphabet Super Highway allows students, parents, and teachers to create, locate, and communicate information through active learning, mentoring, competitions, guided tours, and other on-line activities. It is a wonderful tool and resource! This week's article will cover some of the different uses of this website for use in the classroom or even at home. To go to Alphabet Super Highway's home page: http://www.ash.udel.edu/ash/index.html One of the uses of the Alphabet Super Highway involves its focus on exhibiting student work. Students are able to submit feature articles, poetry, views, reviews, and even art on the cyberzine, "a magazine for kids, by kids." Students are sure to have fun writing with this page! To go directly to the cyberzine: http://www.ash.udel.edu/ash/zine/zinefra... In addition to submissions to the cyberzine, students and teachers are also able to display class projects in the Alphabet Super Highway Exhibit Hall. Another use of the Alphabet Super Highway involves reference tools. The Alphabet Super Highway's library is filled with tools that will help with the ever important -thinking and writing! Dictionaries, thesauruses, and maps team up with useful reference sites such as a weather channel, a zip code page, a White House page (equipped with biographies of presidents and the history of the White House itself), and even a Book Club. Tips on searching the web will also come in handy. To go directly to the ASH library: http://www.ash.udel.edu/ash/library/libr... The Traveling Tutor is another use of the Alphabet Super Highway. Need help with writing skills? How about web skills? The Traveling Tutor develops writing skills by making students write more. Pre-writing, writing, and editing activities are available. Web skills are developed through quick tutorials. The Traveling Tutor also has a Reading Center equipped with links to online books for K-4, 5-8, and 9-12. The Homework Helper is an interesting link which will actually put students in touch with volunteer teachers who help students with a variety of problems/questions. This link is definitely worth a visit.http://www.ash.udel.edu/ash/tutor/tutorf... The Challenger Chaser allows students to play word games as well as participate in writing contests and web treasure hunts. These are just a few of the wonderful uses of the Alphabet Super Highway. It is a source that will allow teachers to find materials and ideas. It is a source that will give students ideas for reports and in depth information on a variety of topics. Check it out!
