Perfect Patios - Part 1

be placed in front. For something a little different, what about 'pictures' on the walls of your 'outdoor room' - I have seen old metal advertising signs, attractive tiles or mosaics panels used to great effect.

Water features are a great addition to any patio - it will allow you to grow some aquatic plants and will also bring a feeling of tranquillity and coolness to the area. At its simplest the water feature could comprise a miniature pond in the form of a stone trough, large container or half-barrel filled with water and planted with aquatic plants. If you have a bit more room, you could create a series of mini-ponds of different sizes grouped together. Moving water adds the extra dimension of sound - you can buy complete kits from a garden centre (such as a pebble fountain or overflowing urn) or buy the basic pump kit and use it as the basis of your own original water feature. Usually the water is recycled through a reservoir, so you don't need a water supply, but an electricity supply is required. It is often easier to site the water feature near to the house for this reason.

Next month I will cover raised beds, containers and suitable patio plants.
