Being confined to a pot means the plant has a limited supply of nutrients, so you must remember to feed the plant regularly. It also helps to scrape off the top layer of compost and replace it once a year. At the same time you can check the plant's rootball and decide whether it needs to be repotted into a larger container.
One last thought - pots are also a good home for impulse buys - those plants you just can't resist buying, yet have no immediate home for. The great thing is, when you do dig a new border, you have pots of mature plants to go in it!
