Easy Perennials From Seed

Geum 'Mrs Bradshaw' -
this is one named variety that comes true from seed. Semi-double scarlet flowers are borne on wiry stems above clumps of hairy leaves. Mine bloom from early May to late September if dead-headed regularly. Height is about 60cm and they like full sun and tolerate most soils if not waterlogged.

Lupinus (lupin) - these plants are great for the new garden as they quickly form large clumps 90cm high and 75cm wide which help to fill out a border. They also give a distinctive cottage garden look with their spires of brightly-coloured flowers. Unfortunately they are prone to mildew and aphid infestation. Seed raised plants give a mixture of colours including white, yellow, red, pink, purple, blue and bi-colours. Grows in most reasonable soils in full sun or partial shade.

Aubrieta x cultorum (formerly A. deltoidea) - this mat-forming evergreen perennial is great for clothing stone walls and stony banks, although it may be too vigorous for the small rock garden. Flowers profusely in spring in various tones of pink and purple. This plant will grow in most soils in full sun.

Alchemilla mollis (lady's mantle) - this useful clump-forming perennial has attractive leaves and sprays of tiny greenish yellow flowers from early summer to autumn. It takes full sun or partial shade and tolerates dry soil. Height is 60cm and self seeds well.

Crocosmia masoniorum - this is actually a corm, but I have included it here as it is so easy to grow. Attractive sword-shaped leaves and arching spikes of orange flowers in summer. Grow in humus-rich soil in sun or partial shade. In cold gardens choose a sheltered spot.
