Find a Job on the Web

The Web is making it easier to find new jobs in the field of engineering. Many new web sites provide listings of job openings and will store resumes for review by prospective employers. The web sites discussed here all provide listings of permanent, full time jobs. Some also provide listings for temporary or contract jobs (more about that in a later article).

All of the sites provide job listings, usually with a keyword search that will allow you to limit the search to geographical areas, types of work, salary ranges, etc. Some of the sites also allow you to store your resume; prospective employers will be able to find it. Most sites also allow you to register to receive e-mail updates when new jobs are posted that meet your defined criteria.

Posting Resumes A word about posting resumes: You must use caution about placing your resume on a web site. Are you currently employed? Would you want your employer to know that you are looking for a new job? On some of the job sites your resume is anonymous, that is, your name and address are not displayed. However, if your resume displays sufficient details about your current job and your past, an employer, whether snooping or honestly looking to hire may recognize your resume. You should think very carefully about placing a detailed resume on the web unless you don't mind who knows that you are looking for another job.

Editor's Choice - Monster Board The Monster Board (http://www.monster.com) is one of the largest and best known job sites. Monster covers all types of jobs, however technical and engineering jobs comprise a large part of their database. Monster will allow you to search their database of jobs and to post a resume. Up to five resumes can be saved on the site; you can activate them for prospective employers to search or individually submit them to employers online when you find a listing using the search.

Other Sites ISA--The Instrument, Systems, and Automation Society (formally the Instrument Society of America) has just recently added a job function, http://www.isajobs.org to their web site, http://www.isa.org. This site specializes in jobs in the industrial measurement and control field, both permanent and consulting. You may post your resume on the site, and receive e-mail. This is a new site, still rapidly growing. At the time I am writing this, the site lists 17 jobs. However, all of the jobs are in the industrial measurement and control field. If you are looking for a job in that field you should check out this site.
