This is the second of two books just published for Michigan gardeners by Lone Pine publishing. It follows the same format as Annuals for Michigan (see above). Both the writing quality and picture quality makes this an outstanding combination of books for Michigan, and gardeners in nearby states. The introduction in the Perennials for Michigan book includes a bit different introductory information. You’ll find illustrations of dividing perennials, different methods of starting perennials (rhizomes, cuttings) and of course, information on possible pests and other problems.

I particularly enjoy the authors’ introduction to each plant. Let’s take a peak at “False Indigo” as an example:

Because false Indigo takes three to four years to mature, a lot of gardeners have overlooked this striking contender for the late-spring garden. A native of Michigan, it’s a wonderful addition to a wildflower bed or to a perennial border with peonies, poppies and irises. Once established, this tough cookie is unfazed by drought and heat and resents disturbance, so it doesn’t need dividing. Pair it with yarrows, roses or other June bloomers, and enjoy. [Page 170]

The remainder of the information on this plant talks about growing the plant, tips for its use, recommended varieties, and problems & pests. Wonderful pictures illustrate the article on each plant.

Next week I'll introduce you to some more Lone Pine field guides. See you then!
