Plant Propagation
Every gardener needs to learn how to successfully propagate a wide range of plants or they will be forced to invest large sums of money in their yards. The Complete Book of Plant Propagation, edited by Charles W. Heuser, and published by Taunton Press in 1997 is an essential reference book for gardeners of all skills and abilities. This book is guaranteed to save you money! Contents This book provides information on propagating virtually any plant you can name. It divides the information into sections on annuals and biennials, herbaceous perennials, ferns, bulbs, corms, and tubers, alpines and rock garden plants, conifers and heathers, shrubs, trees and climbers, houseplants, water plants, herbs, fruit, and vegetable. Each section includes information on "Why Propagate" whichever group of plants is being discussed. It gives tips on raising healthy plants and presents other general information. Then detailed instructions on propagating those plants are provided. This information is accompanied by illustrations that help you understand the text. Each section ends with an Encyclopedia where you will find detailed information on individual plant species with propagation information specific to the plant discussed. Examples of Propagation Techniques Covered Grafting (in the shrub, trees and climbers section) - examples of the many types of grafts available are discussed and illustrated. Every gardener should try his or her hand at propagating a favorite shrub. Use of runners, offsets and plantlets (water plant section) - using these in propagating is both described verbally and with illustrations. You'll soon learn why water gardeners have so many plants to share. Cuttings (conifers and heathers) - starting conifers from cuttings is far easier and faster than waiting for seeds to grow! My Recommendation I've read many books on propagating plants. Some have been geared towards home gardeners while others were for nursery growers. This is the highest quality book I've read geared for the home gardener. I give it my highest recommendation. The Landscape Makeover Book Anyone purchasing an older home is likely to be facing the need for a complete makeover of the existing landscape. Where do I start is the question asked most frequently. This is the book for you! It provides examples of existing landscapes and ideas on making changes with the least amount of effort. Let's take the case of trees as an example. An improperly pruned tree is the first problem to be dealt with in most landscape makeovers. This book provides excellent information on pruning. Accompanying illustrations help to insure that you do things the right way, the first time.
