Books for the Bird Lovers

Do you or your friends and family enjoy feeding backyard birds? May I suggest one of the following books for this holiday season.

Hugh Wiberg's book, Hand-feeding Backyard Birds The book, published by Storey Books, will tempt you into taking bird watching to another level. The author walks you through the method he uses to hand-feed birds. He provides a detailed chapter on each of these species: Black-capped Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse, White-breasted Nuthatch, and the Red-breasted Nuthatch. He then covers the Blue Jay, Downy Woodpecker, Northern Cardinal, White-Throated Sparrow Scrub Jay, Boat-tailed Grackle, Gray Jay, and Clark's Nuthatch in a single chapter. Each of these chapters describes the bird and discusses its lifecycle. Then suggested foods for hand-feeding are discussed.

Another book that may be appropriate this season is Birdscaping Your Backyard by George Adams. The book is published by Rodale Press. The book discusses how to create a backyard landscape that will attract the widest variety of birds. A bird directory that presents information on habitat, migration/winter ranges, breeding ranges, breeding behavior, nesting practices, and feeding habits of various birds commonly found in our backyards follows. The book concludes with a discussion of native plants and a plant encyclopedia concludes this book.

The Backyard Bird-Lover's Guide by Jan Mahnken is another Storey Books publication that provides information on attracting, nesting and feeding birds. The information is presented in a slightly different manner than the above books. This book provides a section covering the feeding and housing of birds and a section on the nesting cycle of birds. The third section provides detailed information single species or bird families. I was amazed that the Appendix wasn't treated as a topic area since it provides a quick guide to the foods preferred by the various bird species, their habitat requirements, and information about the incubation of eggs.

NOTE: I previously reviewed The Backyard Birdhouse Book by Storey Books. You may wish to read that review again when determining which book would be suitable for the special person on your holiday shopping list.

I found the information in all these books to be well-written and easily understood. They give well-researched information on birds and their habits. Either one of them will challenge your favorite birdwatcher to explore other ways of enjoying this hobby.
