The Holidays are here. Many are running too and fro seeking out just the right gifts for the children on your lists. I'd like to share two books suitable for children with you this week.
Larraine Roulston is a newly discovered author for me. I met her through an email group and learned of her special interest in producing books that teach children important garden concepts in a fun way. If you wish to purchase these booklets, you may contact her by sending an email to: roulstonlp@sympatico.ca. Pee Wee's Great Adventure is a guide to vermicomposting for children. As is most suitable for a child's book, the information presented is in story form with characters like Sammy Sowbug, Bradley Beetle, Susie Springtail and Pee Wee (a little red wiggler worm). Pee Wee tells the story of his adventure that begins with Pee Wee falling on a shoe while a class was separating the earthworm castings (worm poop) and restarting the vermicompost setup. The book concludes with a chapter on "Getting Started With Vermicomposting." Children will love this story. Parents and Teachers: Don't be surprised if your children or students insist on setting up a vermicompost system in your home or school. It's something that even a child can do. Roulston is also the author of "Pee Wee and the Magical Compost." As the title indicates, this book teaches children the value of composting. The children are shrunk in size and taken on a butterfly's back on a journey through a compost pile. The end of the book includes a beneficial list of materials to compost and those that do not belong in the compost pile. I shared this booklet with a friend's daughter. She is a 6-year-old young lady who absolutely lights up when plants or gardening is discussed. I asked her to share her favorite part of this book with my readers. Here is Audrey's comment about this book: My favorite thing about the book is the magical butterfly that makes the kids little and sends them into the compost pile to learn about what goes on inside. It's neat how they talk to the bugs! I strongly believe that Larraine Roulston has a future as the author of garden books for children. Her storytelling ability communicates important facts in a fun manner. Children, as the above quote indicates, obviously find her books enjoyable.
