Visitors to the southwestern United States are familiar with Roadrunners. Virginia Douglas, author of Roadrunner, published by Naturegraph in 1984, shares this unique bird's life history. She shares one story that I find quite surprising. According to firsthand accounts, Roadrunners will build a "corral" of cactus pads around sleeping snakes. Then it kills and eats the snake. This has led to the Roadrunner's nickname of "snake eater". If you have any interest in this famous bird, and popular cartoon creature, you'll enjoy this easy to read book. Cuckoos, the Roadrunner's cousin, are also discussed. I find the life history information very comprehensive.

Owls by Day and Night, another Naturegraph book, was written by Hamilton A. Tyler and Don Phillips. Reprinted in 1999, this book is well written. The text is accompanied with both black and white and color illustrations. The book is divided into two parts. The first part discusses general owl characteristics, presents a listing of the 18 owls found in Canada and the United States. Excellent illustrations show you the differences between these species. Appropriate range maps are provided. The second part of the book provides detailed information on barn owls and other typical owls. I find the information presented reliable, making this a suitable reference book for students writing term papers on this subject. In addition, birdwatchers may want this book in their backpack for useful information as they search for owl by locating piles of owl pellets under roosting trees.

The summer of 2001 may be remembered as the year of shark attacks along the eastern coast of the United States. Many false beliefs are held about these creatures. Hal Scharp is the author of About Sharks, published by Naturegraph in 1979, helps to dispel some of these falsely held beliefs. This book consists of two parts. Part 1 is called "Science and Sharks". Part 2 is entitled "The Man-eaters". The information is presented in a question and answer format. The author presents the most currently accurate information available on the life of sharks. Everyone should read this book BEFORE visiting the ocean for a swim - information presented may well keep you from experiencing a shark attack. All illustrations are black and white.

Do you live on the Pacific coast of North or South America? If so, Exploring Pacific Coast Tidepools, written by Vinson Brown and Ane Rovetta, published by Naturegraph in 1996, should be on your bookshelves. It is intended as a nature guide to the critters that dwell in tidepools. Each species is illustrated in black and white. Some colored pictures are provided too. 341 species of shellfish, fish, arthropods and related creatures are described. The one weakness with this book is the lack of life history information on the discussed species. This may be simply because we do not know their life histories.
