Free Stuff for Gardeners and Gardening With Children

Roots Shoots Buckets & Boots is the title of a wonderful book about gardening with children. Sharon Lovejoy shows her love of gardening and her love of children in this fascinating book. It was published by Workman Publishing in 1999,

Lovejoy opens this book by giving information on the best 20 plants for children to grow. This should insure the child's successful first efforts at gardening. Directions for a series of theme gardens follows. Parents who love to garden will find these theme garden designs an excellent way to help their children develop a love for growing things. Gardening is an excellent way for parents and children to work together. Lovejoy's delightful illustrations will help children visualize what they are trying to create. The final section of the book provides basic gardening information including information about using various garden tools. It also encourages children to become an explorer of the garden to find the insects and other animals that take up residence in gardens.

May I suggest this as a holiday gift for your children, or perhaps your nieces, nephews, or grandchildren? Make some cups of hot chocolate and perhaps donuts to share with the gift recipient some cold winter evening. You'll both enjoy reading this book and planning a garden for the summer!

Gardening and the Internet

Judy Heim and Gloria Hansen authored Free Stuff for Gardeners on the Internet. The book was published by C&T Publishing and released in 2000.

I sat down with this book and tested many of the websites suggested (arranged by topic). As is always the case with any book about finding things on the internet, some links no longer work. It really startled me to see a reference to an email group I had owned but disbanded! I did locate some new sites that didn't appear to be in the search engines used on the internet.

The book is organized in an easy to follow format. Newcomers to the internet will find the first section on accessing the internet and using browsers very helpful. Progressing through the book will lead you to good websites on topics as far ranging as growing annuals to where to find rare plants.

I suggest this as a good book to keep near your computer for quick reference. With books of this type, it might be beneficial if either authors or publishers would maintain a website deleting or adding websites as the internet changes rapidly on a day-to-day basis. Perhaps this information would be better provided in cd form rather than in print. Cd's are much less expensive to keep up-to-date.
